Most people have a very hard time identifying what they want to change in life but they know they want to improve their lives. In this article, I will give you 3 areas of improvement and some examples you can choose from to kick off your habit journey.
The WHY
I cannot stress this enough, before starting with any new habit make sure you know why you start it. Even if the overall goal is just to live a healthier life you should know how that habit contributes to the overall goal.
Knowledge
There are several habits I have that ensure I improve my knowledge on a daily basis. Since I am in tech I have technical and non-technical knowledge sessions of about 5 minutes each in which I consume information in laser-focus mode. This is only consumption of information. The application is another thing and is done in longer sessions (e.g. coding session or writing). For the technical session, I like to use YouTube videos in which I expand my knowledge of Flutterflow. The content for non-technical knowledge sessions mainly comes from Blinkist at the moment.
I want to showcase here that it does not need much to improve a little every day and even 5 minutes a day over a year will add up.
Here are some examples summed up (choose your numbers):
10 pages a day of a book.
5 minutes of a Podcast.
1 Blink a day.
Repetition of 10 vocabularies of a new language.
10 minutes of... (the list goes on)
Choose a topic you want to expand your knowledge in and then choose the way you want to consume information. There is no secret sauce to it, just start.
Mindset
This is a broad term but it's such an important thing to have your mindset right. Whatever you start in your life, the probability is quite high you will run into some roadblocks. If you are well-prepared and reflected they won't stop you.
One of the best ways to keep myself and my mindset in line is to constantly remind myself of my WHY's. Why do I want to do it? What does it mean for me? Which sacrifices do I need to make?
Journaling is a good way to keep track of your emotions and how you feel overall on the journey of improving yourself. That's one of my habits that takes 5 minutes a day. Weekly check-in's are also a good way to reflect of how it's going and if you are in line with your goals. Are there any adjustments required?
Another thing that I would add here although I am not sure if it would better fit into health is Meditation. This helps you to slow down a bit and give your nervous system a break from daily stressors. For me, Meditation also contributes to having clarity and removing all the noise.
Here are some examples (choose your numbers):
Repeating your WHY's after waking up.
10 min yoga nidra meditation two times a day.
5 min Journaling a day.
Spending time with like-minded people.
10 min listening to motivational speakers.
Health
Health is a huge topic, which we could talk about for hours. There are so many things you can do to improve your health. The most important ones for me are:
Physical Activity (Gym, Calisthenics, Running)
Nutrition (Balanced Diet and at least 150g of protein)
Hydration (at least 3-4 liters of water a day)
No toxic substances (alcohol, nicotine...)
But there are many more you can target which are not that broad but more specific. It really depends on what exactly you want to improve. But for health, the best way to improve things is to start cooking healthy dishes and develop a workout routine you can stick to. It's the same as for the other habits - start with 10 minutes a day and build it up over time. If you can stick to it there is no way that you not start seeing results.
I started my journey already 2-3 years ago and the only thing I knew was I wanna change my lifestyle and get better - learn new stuff, become healthier and add more muscle, improve my tech skills, and build a bulletproof mindset.
Well, I am still on that journey. That's a lifelong journey.
Keep putting in the reps! NoExcusesNoBS.
